Saks Fifth Avenue has teamed with Warner Bros. Consumer Products and Crystallized (TM) - Swarovski Elements and invited top shoe designers to reinterpret the famed ruby slipper. What better way to celebrate the 70th anniversary of “The Wizard of Oz?” Various designers have re-created this classic shoe and Saks Fifth Avenue will display them during Fashion Week. Following the display, the shoes will be auctioned off with proceeds benefiting the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.
Who are the designers you ask? A. Testoni, Abaete, Alberta Ferretti Betsey Johnson, Botkier, Christian Louboutin, Diane von Furstenberg, Giuseppe Zanotti, Jimmy Choo, L.A.M.B. by Gwen Stefani, Lisa Pliner, Manolo Blahnik, Moschino, Oscar de la Renta, Roger Vivier, Sergio Rossi, Stuart Weitzman, Tibi, and Tuleh. With a list of names like that, you can’t miss this collection (and if you live in NYC, you MUST take a mandatory field trip to Saks Fifth Avenue).
Wonder what Warner Bros. will do for the 100th anniversary - recreate Emerald City via fashion or architecture? The possibilities are endless and until then, I’ll keep wishing I was … in these ruby slippers.

Trojan Fever

In the past weeks, ThisNext has made a small effort to get you pumped for the college football season. And in the spirit of friendly rivalry, I want to set my esteemed colleague in the right direction. He seems to believe that Leland Stanford Junior University will once again squeak out a fluke win over my dear Trojans. Let’s be fair friends, Stanford is a pretty darn good school, but their football team has near nothing on USC. This year the Trojans boast a great offense lead by Junior Quarterback Mark Sanchez. And you can’t forget Pete Carroll - one of the greatest college football coach of our time. This team is jam packed with talent and is sure to make a run for the National Championship. And with the first game of the season less than two days away, you are going to need to stock up on Trojan items for your gameday party. Whether it is a tailgate outside of the stadium in Virginia or a rowdy gathering in front of the TV, Trojan fans everywhere will be cheering Beat the Cavaliers! Which, I am sure, is something that me and my Stanford buddy can both get behind because when it is all said and done, both teams represent the Pac-10 Conference.

The Best of Both Worlds

That’s right it’s what everyone has been waiting for, a list of clothing worn by the one and only Miley Cyrus. She hosted the Teen Choice Awards two weeks ago and looked fabulous while doing it. On this list are some of the hot outfits she wore. She also recently came out with a new album that features hits, “7 Things” and “See you Again.” FINALLY, she has been preparing for the up and coming HANNAH MONTANA MOVIE along with her 16TH BIRTHDAY! I know I’m excited. Admit it, you can’t help but love this 15 year old pop sensation.

Starving artist chic

This ThisNexter really loves fashion - maybe not as much as FashionKitty - but I used to steal Vogue when I went to the doctor’s office as a little kid. Well I grew up and became an artist/actor/writer… basically I grew up to be broke. I still love fashion but I can’t afford $500 boots, to be honest I can’t afford $100 boots! What’s a girl to do? Bargain shop. Those words might strike horror in the hearts of the weaker willed, and now you’ve found a place to scout out the deals. Bargain bins be gone! Another bonus to online starving artist shopping: if the shop is not in your state, there is no sales tax! Maybe you’ll be able to save up for that new flavor of ramen noodles!

When I first got out of school I had no money and student loans coming out of my —-. Well, I moved into a small little apartment, and while my roommate had her parents buy her a matching bedroom set and matching living room set I set up my room with an air mattress and my packing boxes duct-taped together to form clothes shelves and book shelves and an upside down box to use as a desk - thus the birth of Starving Artist Chic!

Betsey Johnson's 30th Anniversary

Yesterday I stopped by Betsey Johnson’s 30th Anniversary party. There was partying, plenty of shopping and boy did I have a swell time. As soon as I walked in, there was a huge display front and center with all of the anniversary products. I immediately scooped up 2 tees, 2 pairs of socks, and 2 cupcake thongs (hint, hint I will be giving away some of those products in an upcoming contest). There were also cupcakes, candy, and champagne … my three favorite “C”s. BUT they were off limits to me due to the Fashion Week Diet.

Are those cupcakes really that good?

Curious, yet oblivious, foot patrons up & down trendy Melrose Avenue stopped to ask as hundreds of us stood and sat in line outside of what could easily be mistaken as a bakery bright and early Saturday morning. In actuality, we were all anticipating the grand opening of Johnny Cupcakes first boutique on the west coast. Some excited fans traveled all the way from Boston, where the brand originated. Others camped out for up to four days to be the first in line. Then, there were those of us who showed up only hours before the doors opened and ended up sitting in line well into the midnight hours and missing out on those delicious little cupcakes (I managed to grab one but others around me were less fortunate) and free gifts. As a gesture of appreciation, Johnny Cupcakes himself took the time out to repeatedly come out [in his apron] and ensure us that he would personally stay and work all night until each one of us got our turn to drop ridiculous amounts of cash in the store.

The store itself was a treat! The presentation and design is as amazing and one-of-a-kind as the brand. It’s a colorful, relaxed, and cozy atmosphere that everyone fell in love with instantly.

Most importantly, Johnny Cupcakes t-shirts and merchandise were finally at my fingertips to be touched and bought. Instant gratification and no shipping fees!

Who Is Eugene Montross?

Google ‘Eugene Montross’ and you will come up with pages of confused people trying to unravel the mystery behind a single t-shirt slogan.

Well, who is he? The answer is nothing spectacular. He’s a budding fashion designer with friends in high places. In a genius marketing ploy, he got those celebrity friends to start wearing this enigmatic t-shirt in magazines and during performances, including Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes who also happens to be his biggest sponsor and friend. The shirt even made an appearance on the MTV Video Music Awards last year when up-and-coming rapper Tyga wore it alongside Lil’ Wayne. The guy became everything short of a cult classic with so many people trying to figure out exactly who or what it was.

After a year since it made it’s MTV debut, the clothing line is finally for sale to the public. I can hear the sound of collective sighs of relief as frustrated Montross theorists around the globe put in their t-shirt orders.
